The students 'knocked the socks off' of their first audience with an incredible performance of Romeo and Juliet.
WOW! They did GREAT!!
Lots of laughs as the audience began to realize that we were NOT doing the same R&J that they've seen before. Ours had a few twists that were fun and unexpected. Believe me; no Grampa's were napping in the back row ;-)
Our goal was to bring Shakespeare's beautiful story of R&J to life in a way that families could enjoy together, smile about, not be intimidated by, and go home and ask questions and find out:
Who was this Shakespeare guy, anyway?
As the students awakened the tale of friendship, love, family dynamics, loyalty, betrayal, murder, suicide and revenge… the audience watched every move and laughed every laugh, and applauded often, making for a lasting memory for everyone involved.
This was a true heartwarming experience for me as Director. I watched these talented kids walk into that first audition feeling nervous and alone, and then watched them learn and grow and build friendships each week and saw their confidence grow more and more until I finally watched them pour their heart and soul into this performance as a solid confident GROUP. It was really something special!
Even though an audience member had to help us with one of the curtains, a spot light came unplugged, a small child in the audience talked through the entire show and the dressing room was as hot as my kitchen on Thanksgiving Day… our debut performance went off great!
I am extremely proud of this wonderful group of young performers!
